چکیده

Direct numerical simulations are used to study mixing and dispersion in decaying stably stratified turbulence from a Lagrangian perspective. The change in density of fluid particles owing to small-scale mixing is extracted from the simulations to provide insight into the mixing process. These changes are driven by temporally and spatially intermittent events that are strongly suppressed as the stratification increases and overturning motions disappear. This occurs for times Nt > 2π, i.e. after one buoyancy period, where N is the buoyancy frequency. The role of small-scale mixing processes in the density (or buoyancy) flux is analysed. After an initial transient, we find that diapycnal displacements due to mixing dominate the dispersion of fluid particles, even in weak stratification. The relationship between the diapycnal diffusivity and vertical dispersion coefficients is found to be strongly dependent on stratification. Models for the mixing following fluid particles are investigated. The time scale for the density changes due to small-scale mixing is shown to be approximately independent of N and instead remains linked to the energy decay time scale which is relatively insensitive to stratification. There are large changes in the structure of these flows as they evolve under the influence of buoyancy forces. We investigate these changes and their relationship to mixing. We find that strong mixing events are closely linked to the presence of overturning regions in the flow, and that they occur close to (but not within) these regions. The results reported here have implications for the development of improved models of diffusion in stably stratified turbulence.

Simulation of entrainment near a density stratified layer: Laboratory experiment and LIDAR observation

In this paper a simple qualitative model of the growth of a mixed layer adjacent to a uniform layer with a stably stratified layer is presented. The depth variations of mixed layer can be estimated from direct measurements. The Entrainment of a stably stratified layer into a turbulent mixed layer in a confined region was studied in laboratory for different Richardson numbers. The internal waves...

Energetics aspects in Direct Numerical Simulations of a turbulent stratified flow: irreversible mixing

Direct Numerical Simulations of a linearly stratified bounded fluid in decaying turbulence are performed. The abscence of vertical periodicity allows the stratification of the system to evolve in time. We observe that mixing efficiency increases as a function of the Richardson number Ri, and saturates to a maximum value of 0.25. This evolution adjusts quantitatively to the statistical predictio...

On the mixing efficiency in stably stratified turbulence

The mixing efficiency Rf (more formally referred to as the flux Richardson number) is a widely used parameter that is intended to provide a measure of the amount of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) that is irreversibly converted to background potential energy as a result of turbulent mixing in a stably stratified fluid. In this paper, three different definitions of the mixing efficiency that are ...

Diapycnal diffusivities in homogeneous stratified turbulence

[1] Quantifying diapycnal mixing in stably stratified turbulence is fundamental to the understanding and modeling of geophysical flows. Data of diapycnal mixing from direct numerical simulations of homogeneous stratified turbulence and from grid turbulence experiments, are analyzed to investigate the scaling of the diapycnal diffusivity. In these homogeneous flows the instantaneous diapycnal di...

Dynamics of wind-forced coherent anticyclones in open ocean

1 We numerically study the dynamics of coherent anticyclonic eddies in the ocean interior. For 2 the hydrostatic, rotating, stably-stratified turbulence we use a high-resolution, Primitive3 Equation model forced by small-scale winds in a idealized configuration. Many properties 4 of the horizontal motions are found to be similar to those of two-dimensional and quasi5 geostrophic turbulence. Maj...
